Love Lies Bleeding: Rose Glass’ film gains points for the much matter-of-fact way it treats the romance between its two protagonists, even if that sensibility feels out of place in the 1980s portrayed, The neo-noir sort of tale follows a gym manager, who meets a traveling bodybuilder; they enter a relationship, and get involved in a tale of vengeance. The film is trying to cram a bit too much, and neither part feels complete or convincing, with a few too many easy answers or plot holes. Also, neither character is particularly engaging, even if the lengths they are willing to go for each other can be endearing. The performances are fine, but not spectacular: Kristen Stewart as the resourceful gym manager, Katy O’Brian as the sweet bodybuilder, and Ed Harris as the dangerous father of the first. The film has some aesthetic flourishes, but its most impressive aspect is the precise costume design by Olga Mill.
