The Nature of Love: Monia Chokri’s film tells the story of a woman, from academia with money, who falls in love with a blue-collar, simple man. The film is a bit on-the-nose in its investigation of the ideas of love and desire, but it’s interesting how it also looks at how challenging falling in love with your polar opposite can be (or with someone just like you, for that matter). Magalie Lépine-Blondeau plays the protagonist, an intellectual who gives in to her carnal side, with a good degree of charm. Pierre-Yves Cardinal has the necessary phisicality to play the romantic but simple construction worker, but his performance feels a bit too overplayed. Aesthetically, the film veers away from the too-conventional, as cinematographer André Turpin gives the film a dark and intimate look, and editor Pauline Gaillard has a few tricks of their own to make it more interesting.
