Fifth about The Seventh

Civil War (2024)

Civil War: the setting of Alex Garland’s war-time drama is as provocative as irrelevant. No matter how enticing it would be to know how the world in the film got the way it did, its focus is on the fame-hungry, thrill-seeking war journalists covering the conflict. Any other theater of operations would serve the story equally well, if not better. The group is formed by a veteran war photographer, played with grit by Kirsten Dunst; her sidekick, who Wagner Moura plays as if always intoxicated by something or other; an elder journalist, played by Stephen McKinley Henderson with sweet wiseness; and an ambitious and young photographer, intent on throwing herself in the ring, played by Cailee Spaeny. Truth be told, however, the one character and performance that will remain is a cold and cruel unnamed soldier, played memorably by Jesse Plemons. The film is well put together, with efficiently made war sequences and thrilling moments, nicely shot by cinematographer Rob Hardy and cut by editor Jake Roberts; the sound design is also quite solid.
