Fifth about The Seventh

All to Play For (Rien à Perdre)

All to Play For: Delphine Deloget’s hard-hitting drama follows a loving but overwhelmed mother who loses the custody of her youngest son after he gets hurt one night while alone at their house. The protagonist is a complex, interesting character: clearly hotheaded and impulsive, certainly not responsible, but caring and loving. It is an excellent performance by Virginie Efira, whose range goes from numerous outbursts to quiet conversations with her kids and is always convincing. Arieh Worthalter and Mathieu Demy are fine as her two brothers, and Félix Lefebvre, as her oldest son, is quite good. The film has simple and perfectly appropriate aesthetics, with careful costume choices for the protagonist that point to her blue-collar status and edgy attitude.
