Fifth about The Seventh

Magallanes

Magallanes: Salvador del Solar’s hard-hitting film is unafraid to look into the dirty deeds from the recent past in Peru, as it tells the story of a former soldier who barely survives as a taxi driver in Lima. His past comes knocking as he meets a woman in his taxi. The protagonist is an interesting character, acting as much out of the need to leave the misery of his life behind as out of some sense of atonement. It is a fine, sympathetic performance by Damián Alcázar. Magaly Solier gives a very emotional performance as the woman he meets, who has a painful past and a tough present. The film looks very good, offering a great view of the impoverished areas of the city; cinematographer Diego Jiménez frames nicely and lits moodily; editor Eric Williams gives the film a fine pace.
