Fifth about The Seventh

Ava (2017)

Ava: the protagonist of Léa Mysius’s drama is not having a good time: in what is supposed to be a lazy summer at the beach, she finds out she is about to lose her eyesight soon. What follows is how she reacts to it. Even though it is a hard situation, the title character is never particularly sympathetic, a moody teenager; in fact, no character is very engaging in this tale, alas. Noée Abita, as the main character, is effective in portraying her moodiness, all frowns and pouts. Laure Calamy is also fine as the loving mother, self-centered and in denial as she is. Cinematographer Paul Guilhaume’s images are colourful and saturated, mirroring the condition of the protagonist with the opposition of light and darkness. Composer Florencia Di Concilio’s original score enhances the uneasiness of the situation, while a few licensed songs accentuate the happy moments.
