Miracle in Milan: Vittorio De Sica’s film, despite its fantastical storyline and light tone, has a rather sad core at its center. The film follows a young man, who as a young kid was abandoned and adopted; later, he moves to Milan where he goes to live in a slum. The protagonist is a highly energetic, upbeat, and naïve young man; he is a winning character, played with a warm smile and slightly awkward physicality by Francesco Golisano. It is an effective piece of performance. Brunella Bovo plays his (eventual) love interest, in a cute but unremarkable performance. The film is filled with great faces playing the supporting characters. The slums, created by production designer Guido Fiorini, show the hardships of such a life, but also allow the idea of something worth fighting for. Composer Alessandro Cicognini creates a very evocative musical score a fine match to the fairy-tale-ish tone of the film. The film is nicely shot by cinematographer G.R. Aldo.
