Priscilla: the way Sofia Coppola tells the story of Priscilla Presley in this biopic, the title character, in the relationship with her eventual husband Elvis, was always asked to limit herself to a supporting position in the backstage of his life, where his posse is more important than his famous manager. In that sense, the film mostly shows just his intimacy because that’s where her life meets his. It is her biopic, but it’s also his by association. It is an interesting film, but also one with very low-wattage drama. Cailee Spaeny does a very fine job as the protagonist, playing a small girl who is awestruck by the attention of her famous beau but nevertheless retains an edge, despite essentially being smothered by him. Jacob Elordi makes a credible Elvis, nailing his speech pattern and proving a good visual match. Cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd’s images are luxurious, and the costumes by designer Stacey Battat are well done.
