Fifth about The Seventh

A Brighter Tomorrow (Il Sol dell’Avvenire)

A Brighter Tomorrow: maybe the ambitious intents of Nanni Moretti with this dramedy were too big for its runtime, or maybe it was never a cohesive package to begin with. One way or another, this is a mix of many things; it tries to be a political allegory, a critique on the current state of cinema (at least the Netflix joke is one of the few things in this film that lands), a film about love with Italian songs, a comical look into the inner workings of a film set. Needless to say, the mix is a disservice to the parts and the whole. Moretti’s acting as the insecure but self-important movie director is stilted; Margherita Buy, as his long-suffering wife, is a bit better, but far from memorable; Silvio Orlando, with a smaller role as a veteran actor, is maybe the best of the bunch, but that’s hardly a strong compliment. Aesthetically, the film is serviceable and nothing more.
