Fifth about The Seventh

Belle de Jour

Belle de Jour: Luis Buñuel posits, in this classic, that the road to marital bliss is not unique; in this case, the young wife decides to become a prostitute during the afternoons to deal with her own sexual proclivities or lack thereof. The film veers aggressively towards surrealism, to the point that even the obvious dream sequences almost could take place in the film’s reality; it’s all very provocative. Alas, it also feels a bit cold. Catherine Deneuve has rarely been more ravishing and entrancing; her angelic looks and prudish posture are a great weapon of seduction. And oh, how well-dressed she is all the time! Editor Louisette Hautecoeur effectively moves from episode to episode, and the film never feels rushed or bloated. Cinematographer Sacha Vierny moves the camera around beautifully.
