Wingwomen: Mélanie Laurent’s action comedy follows a pair of friends, who happen to be thieves, trying to leave the criminal life behind and live a quiet life. The action is generic and unexciting and the comedy is not particularly funny, but the film has two things going for it. First, the two friends are played by Adèle Exarchopoulos and Mélanie Laurent herself (the first an insecure weapons specialist, the second the more experienced brains of the duo), and while neither performance calls for much, their energy and exuberance (as well as Manon Bresch’s, who joins the team as a getaway driver) are clear and welcome. Second, their camaraderie is entertaining and heartfelt. Aesthetically the film is polished but unremarkable, even if the locations are, expectedly, a joy to look at.
