Fifth about The Seventh

The Killer (2023)

The Killer: this thriller, by David Fincher, is both stylish and cold, as it follows a hitman who misses the mark and has to deal with the dire consequences of his error. What follows is mostly procedural, as the protagonist goes around the world tying loose ends, explaining his steps and mindset. Michael Fassbender plays quite well the protagonist, a man who doesn’t speak much and tries to disappear into the background (somewhat tricky when you are Michael Fassbender, but oh well); he does have a lot of voice-overs, however, and his mantra is repeated often to amusing effects. The rest of the cast gets only limited screen time, so it’s Tilda Swinton the sole other performer who makes it truly memorable, playing a woman in the same line of work. Director of Photography Erik Messerschmidt uses (appropriately, considering the storyline) a neutral, cold, elegant camerawork. The film uses a lot of The Smiths (The Killer is a fan) and mixes it with an uneasy original score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
