Black Box: Asli Özge’s film is set in a boiling pot, a group of run-down apartment buildings where the tenants are at odds with the real estate company. However, the film seems to distrust its own setup and adds an artificial and unconvincing device to lock all inhabitants in place, as a way to try to raise their stress and the stakes. Alas, all it manages to be is contrived, subtracting from the overall experience. The large cast is merely OK; Luise Heyer, as a woman trying to get her first job interview in ages, is probably the best name; Felix Kramer, as the manager on-site, is sleazy and calculating enough; Christian Berkel, as an elderly man prone to conspiracy theories, is fine as well; no one else truly registers. Cinematographer Emre Erkmen uses a handheld camera to keep the viewer feeling part of the action; editor Patricia Rommel gives the film a decent pace.
