The Adventure: Michelangelo Antonioni’s drama looks into a weekend boat trip of a handful of rich Romans and its aftermath after a woman mysteriously disappears and is searched by her best friend and her lover. The film is set in the still dilapidated 1950s Italy post-WWII, and as the pair travels around, it opposes the haves and have-nots. It is an elegant and distressing film, even if it’s not easy to connect to the protagonists. Lea Massari plays the disappearing woman, who is unhappy with things in her life, well enough; Monica Vitti, as her best friend, goes from deeply worried to deeply in love, and she always looks charming and convincing; Gabriele Ferzetti plays the lover with some rough charm but not much else. The film is nicely shot by cinematographer Aldo Scavarda, who finds a good number of beautiful images; editor Eraldo Da Roma gives it a nice, balanced pace. Nice musical score by Giovanni Fusco.
