The Longest Goodbye: the fascination with space travel is always strong, even stronger with the perspective of a mission to Mars. The technical difficulties are what people generally have in mind, but Ido Mizrahy’s documentary looks at the other half of the equation, the human factor. In the best-case scenario, this is a 3-year mission where the crew would be isolated, so the film looks into the effort being made to ensure their psychological well-being, as well as their family. The film spreads its attention mostly between two astronauts, both of whom already spent substantial time on the International Space Station (so can relay their experiences) and the NASA Psychologist who leads the effort. Even though there is some amount of historical experiences already, the film is mostly asking questions and not yet fully answering them. It is informative but nevertheless feels, naturally, incomplete. Still, the generous access to footage from the ISS makes this an intriguing watch.
