Fifth about The Seventh

On the Adamant (Sur l’Adamant)

On the Adamant: Nicolas Philibert’s documentary is the perfect companion to the project it portrays, a boat that serves a day center care for psychiatric patients. It is very humane and composed in its portrayal of, mostly, the patients. The space provides them the means and the opportunity to be creative and artistic, to feel valued, in other words, to feel alive. It is a beautiful project, one that absolutely deserves to be known. That does not make the film flawless, however; any documentary depends on its subjects, and in this case, they are naturally very uneven. Some of them are fascinating to listen to, such as the gentleman who says his life echoes those of Van Gogh and Jim Morrison. Some of them, alas, aren’t as eloquent, and the film drags a bit because of it. In any case, Philibert, who did triple duty as director-cinematographer-editor, has great access and makes very good use of it.
