Elemental: Peter Sohn uses a fantasy setting to tell a story of immigration, identity, and family ties; it follows the daughter of an immigrant family who is expected to follow the steps of her father, a plan which may be thwarted when she meets a young man from a different element. The film naturally navigates toward a positive message, such as focusing on what others can build instead of what they can destroy. It is a thoroughly enjoyable and emotional story, anchored by two lovable protagonists; they are beautifully voiced by Leah Lewis (who, well, plays the fiery character with a lot of spark) and Mamoudou Athie (charming and slightly awkward).
The animation is beautiful. The design of the characters is simple, even if they are always recognizable; the most impressive aspect, considering how fluid, translucent, and reflexive they are, is how much they interact visually with each other and the environment. The city itself (the production designer is Don Shank) is inventive and colorful, but it’s not overwhelming or distracting, as it is used sparingly. Composer Thomas Newman contributes with a good musical score, which has Asian overtones; the song “Steal The Show”, by Newman and Lauv, follows the same aesthetic and it’s a nice addition.
