Fifth about The Seventh

No Hard Feelings (2023)

No Hard Feelings: Gene Stupnitsky’s comedy follows a young, sexually liberated woman trying to seduce a younger man to escape her financial hardships. The protagonist is more interesting than the film surrounding her: it is not particularly raunchy or sexy, the comedy is generally far from funny, and it’s too shallow of a character study. Trying as hard as she can as a comedian, Jennifer Lawrence still can’t make this lifeless screenplay sing, but she certainly looks the part. Andrew Barth Feldman, as her awkward but sweet prey, is quite good with his somewhat undeveloped character, displaying fine comic chops. Laura Benanti and Matthew Broderick, as his parents, are a good team. Aesthetically, the film is serviceable and unmemorable, making ho-hum use of its allegedly paradisiac setting.
