Fifth about The Seventh

EO (IO)

EO: Jerzy Skolimowski’s deceptively simple road movie follows a sweet donkey as he is freed from the circus where he performed with his beloved handler and goes on a series of misadventures throughout Poland and Europe. The film is mostly sad and nerve-wracking, due to the awareness that mankind is generally unkind towards animals. What truly makes this film so interesting, however, is the exemplary use of cinematic language to tell its story: cinematographer Michał Dymek’s camerawork is expressive and subjective, and the beautiful images are stitched together by editor Agnieszka Glińska in a way that showcases the importance of editing (suggestion: read about juxtaposing images and the Kuleshov effect), which includes the use of music throughout the whole film. Most of the acting comes from the six animals that play the titular donkey, but Sandra Drzymalska, as his caring original owner, is quite touching in the role.
