Last Flag Flying: Richard Linklater’s quietly emotional drama meanders a bit, but ultimately sticks its landing; it’s a painful look at the mismatched (but yet, deep-down, matched because of their military experiences) characters. Their interactions are what matters the most here, and thankfully they are well-defended by the cast: Steve Carell’s performance is quiet, subtle and fully appropriate for what his character is going through; Bryan Cranston is the opposite, loud and profane; Laurence Fishburne falls somewhere in between with his dignified but outbursty character. Cicely Tyson has a short but memorable participation. The film has a generally fine, simple look that serves its purpose.
