The Mountain Between Us: the greatest asset in Hany Abu-Assad’s survival drama is, undoubtedly, its central pair: both Kate Winslet and Idris Elba are engaging, attractive performers, but they are handed plain, uninteresting characters and give low-key performances; there’s not much chemistry either, but a lot of that rests on the bland writing. All that transpires is telegraphed and lacking emotional depth. The film partly makes up for that with the breath-taking locations, very beautifully captured by director of photography Mandy Walker (who also manages to shoot many scenes in low light in a very enticing way), but that’s too little.
