The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki: Juho Kuosmanen’s account of true events is a pleasurable, unassuming experience. The choice to frame this story in this particular way, focusing on the human side instead of the sporting story, proves to be a winning decision. The main character is lovable and engaging, and exceedingly well-played by Jarkko Lahti; Oona Airola is also a fine presence, and they have great chemistry together. The film is shot in awesome black-and-white by Jani-Petteri Passi, the camera being lively and curious at all times, making liberal use of extended takes; period reconstruction is solid.
