Tale of Tales: Matteo Garrone’s film mixes the beautiful, the grotesque, the touching, the fantastic and the unexpected, as fairy tales ought to; as a result, the film is engaging through and through (even if it would be more so if the three storylines were more intrinsically connected; as it is, it’s harder to connect to all the character involved). The cast is game, in particular Toby Jones. The visuals are wonderful-looking, in particular all the locations used and the costumes designed by Massimo Cantini Parrini, nicely captured by cinematographer Peter Suschitzky. Alexandre Desplat’s score proves to be a great asset to the experience.
