Hail, Caesar!: this Ethan and Joel Coen film has a multitude of storylines and a large gallery of characters, all created with great care; for better or worse, all of them deserve more time, but that’s more a measure of success than failure. Also, the setting and the universe portrayed are delicious by themselves. The storylines lean towards the preposterous, but that just adds to the off-beat humor and entertainment value. The cast is game, and all of them are tone-perfect; Josh Brolin, as the conducting thread, and Alden Ehrenreich are superb. The film is well-crafted, top-to-bottom: Roger Deakins’ lensing is great as usual, capturing the rich costume and set design in golden hues.
