Fifth about The Seventh

Son of Saul (Saul Fia)

son-of-saul-poster-3Son of Saul: László Nemes not so much tells a story, but uses a conducting thread to journey through one of the most abominable moments of History; a journey that is very specific to the main character, but also representative of the whole. This, and the stylistic choice to shoot it as it was shot (director of photography Mátyás Erdély tight framing through extended takes is a thing of beauty; it also, for once, makes perfect conceptual sense) makes this a sad, hard, tiring but worthy experience. Géza Röhrig is a strong presence.
