Trumbo: Jay Roach’s film is a capable biopic: the subject matter is an interesting figure, the plot carries some important messages and has a few emotional moments. Nevertheless, it’s excessively schematic, simplistic, and rarely one feels how much there is at stake, resulting in a somewhat pedestrian experience. Acting is generally solid; it’s a large cast, with plenty of great names in it, but Bryan Cranston has the most to do, and he does it well. Nicely put together, even if it has an excessively polished art direction.
