Mr. Holmes: Bill Condon’s film is a fine, melancholic investigation of what could have been (in a fictional sense); it breaks new grounds without losing respect for its subject’s essence. Laura Linney is solid here and Milo Parker has very good moments, but it’s an McKellen who steals the show; his performance is rich, subtle, and he makes great use both of his voice and posture (aided by the very good make-up) to portray the different time periods. Classically, elegantly shot by Tobias A. Schliessler.
