Macbeth: the source material, of course, is a tragedy of the highest order (and, unlike the beautiful words of Shakespeare, it’s full of sound and fury and it signifies a lot); Justin Kurzel’s adaptation is a properly dreadful, heavy affair, and a tad slow-moving. It’s a highly visual piece; the locations are a perfect fit for the tone, and director of photography Adam Arkapaw captures many highly impactful, beautiful images. Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard are intense, ferocious, and have good control of the hard cadences of the text.
