Victoria: Sebastian Schipper has a nice story to tell, but it’s the manner chosen to have the story told that raises the level of interest in this film; it is, nevertheless, quite touching in general, as well as gut-wrenching at times. The bias for tracking shots in this space is well-documented; the feat that cinematographer Sturla Brandth Grøvlen has produced here is stunning. While the framing is mostly claustrophobic, it’s always engaging, stunt or not. The story would probably be well-served if told in a more traditional style because Laia Costa and Frederick Lau, as the central characters, are both intense and lovely (and they are both so without the traditional benefit of editing.)
