Fifth about The Seventh

The Apartment

The ApartmentThe Apartment: Billy Wilder’s film mixes a great deal of sweetness and cynicism, comedy and drama; somehow, there’s no part that doesn’t belong. It’s an engaging (and all too believable) story, told very earnestly. The dialogue sounds great, and it’s beautifully read by a very capable cast: Shirley MacLaine (who rarely, if ever, looked this lovely), Jack Lemmon, and Fred MacMurray are great, and so is the supporting cast. Elegantly shot by Joseph LaShelle. Great finishing line (did Wilder know how to finish a movie or what? For that matter, how to begin or continue one, as well.)
