45 Years: Andrew Haigh’s film less tells a story and more presents a starting situation and lets the character’s reactions unfurl in a touching, sad way. The result is two-fold: the pace is very ponderous, filled with quiet moments; by the other hand, it gives space for the beautiful acting of the central pair. Charlotte Rampling is simply marvelous and so is Tom Courtenay. Both are subtle, unshowy performances and the anchor of this work.
