Irrational Man: Woody Allen fiddles with recurring, tired storylines, character types and themes; the execution brings little freshness to the proceedings, even if it is competent. The cast is solid: Joaquin Phoenix plays a brooding neurotic like a pro, while Emma Stone is a great-looking ingénue. The film looks great, thanks to the beautiful locations and the simple but effective lensing of Darius Khondji (even if the editing of Alisa Lepselter feels a bit loose, forced to mix somewhat unmatching shots). The soundtrack is symbolic: it cycles a few Ramsey Lewis songs, and even thought they are great to listen to, eventually their similarity makes one wonder why nothing new is being done.
