Casa Grande: Fellipe Barbosa’s film has an intriguing starting point; however, there is an emotional detachment that makes it hard to connect with the characters (which are, furthermore, uninteresting and schematic). The morality in play is shallow and too discursive, to the point that some issues seem tacked in. The cast is, for the most part, indifferent; Thales Cavalcanti, as the main character, is too much of an apathetic cypher. The film is competently, if unspectacularly, made; Pedro Sotero’s camerawork is elegant, without any frills.
