The Boxtrolls: there’s no denying how charming the style of animation of Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi’s film is (and time-consuming as well, as a short scene during the credits can attest); that ends up being the greatest feat of the movie. All characters are visually distinctive, and the environment, detailed; some are also dark. That fits the story, which has cute elements but doesn’t shy from gloomier aspects. In spite of that, it carries an inspiring, but tacked in and simple message. Voice acting, particularly by the supporting characters (Nick Frost and Richard Ayoade are the standouts), is solid.
