Labor Day: Jason Reitman tells this story earnestly, without any shred of irony; and while it develops perhaps too conveniently, too quickly (in all fairness, the characters may justify it), it results in a touching, sorrowful film. The characters are very well-defended by the good-looking cast: Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin and Gattlin Griffith are all very solid. Beautifully shot by Eric Steelberg (who makes great use of the Autumn light) and edited for maximum emotional punch.
