Notorious: a typically classy Alfred Hitchcock’s film; the story is simple, relatively unadorned, but it nevertheless produces some moments of great suspense. The cast is a marvel, and it’s hard to go wrong with its central trio: Ingrid Bergman (as beautiful as ever), Cary Grant and Claude Rains, all pitch-perfect, portraying rich characters. As is usually the case with Hitchcock, there are visually interesting shots which are always justified. Small details, such as a waiter speaking in perfectly accented Portuguese, add to the whole.
